Coordinating Minister Yusril Opens The 10th ICLJ 2026 Hosted by UIN Jakarta, Emphasizes Law Must Protect Vulnerable Groups
FSH News, Malang – Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, through its Faculty of Sharia and Law (FSH), reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening international academic networks by organizing The 10th International Conference on Law and Justice (ICLJ) 2026. The international conference, themed “Reimagining Law and Justice: Bridging Inequality and Protecting the Vulnerable in a Changing World”, was held in collaboration with the Faculty of Sharia UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang and Universiti Malaya on July 6–8, 2026, at Ijen Suites Resort & Convention, Malang.
Marking its 10th edition, the conference served as a scholarly forum bringing together academics, researchers, practitioners, and students from universities at home and abroad to discuss strategic issues related to law, justice, and the protection of vulnerable groups amid global dynamics. A total of 74 lecturers from the Faculty of Sharia and Law UIN Jakarta participated in the conference series as part of efforts to strengthen academic collaboration and international scholarly publications.
The conference was officially opened by the Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Yusril Ihza Mahendra, S.H., M.Sc. In his keynote speech, he stressed that law must provide real protection for vulnerable groups such as women victims of violence, children, persons with disabilities, migrant workers, indigenous communities, and the poor.
"Law must not only serve those with power, education, and access. True justice is realized when the most vulnerable groups also receive genuine legal protection," Yusril emphasized.
Beyond highlighting the importance of human rights protection, Minister Yusril also addressed challenges facing the legal system in the digital era, including the rise of artificial intelligence, climate change, cross-border migration, and the implementation of Indonesia’s new Criminal Code (KUHP) and Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP), which came into effect in January 2026. He noted that Indonesia’s criminal law reform must prioritize restorative justice approaches that focus not only on punishment but also on victim recovery and the restoration of social relations.
Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Tholabi, S.Ag., S.H., M.H., M.A., in his remarks, stated that a decade of ICLJ reflects UIN Jakarta’s commitment to building an academic tradition responsive to developments in law and global humanitarian challenges.
"For ten years, ICLJ has been a space for academic collaboration that brings together diverse scholarly perspectives to generate ideas relevant to the development of law, justice, and public policy," he said.
Meanwhile, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, Drs. H. Basri, M.A., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of cross-country collaboration in producing research-based policy recommendations that can address contemporary social challenges.

Mufidah (UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang).
In addition to plenary sessions, the conference also hosted eight parallel panels discussing strategic issues such as human rights and vulnerable groups, law and gender, digital governance, economic justice, climate change, public policy, Islamic legal reform, and developments in modern criminal law.
The research presented highlighted strong academic attention to issues of vulnerable group protection, digital transformation, artificial intelligence governance, digital Islamic finance, indigenous community rights, environmental justice, and national legal reform. The forum became a meeting ground for innovative ideas expected to enrich the development of research-based public policy.
