Family Law Legal Opinion Workshop at FSH UIN Jakarta Enhances Students’ Legal Drafting Competencies

FSH News, 6th Floor Theater Room — The Research and Development Department of the Research Division of the Family Law Student Association (HMPS) at the Faculty of Sharia and Law (FSH), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, once again organized a skills-based academic activity through a Legal Opinion Workshop. Held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the 6th Floor Theater Room of FSH, the workshop was enthusiastically attended by students from the morning session.

The event began at 8:40 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB) and was hosted by Masters of Ceremony Laeli Falakhatil Ikhda and Muhammad Fakhri Abror. The program opened with remarks from the organizing committee chair, Fawwaz Shadra Avveroes; Chairperson of HMPS Family Law for the 2026–2027 period, Muhammad Rifqy Hakim; and Secretary of the Family Law Study Program, Ali Mansur, M.A. In their remarks, they emphasized the importance of strengthening students’ academic capacities through practical and skills-oriented training.

The opening session reached its highlight with remarks and the official launch of the workshop by Dean of FSH, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Maksum, S.H., M.H., MDC. In his address, he expressed his full support for the workshop and emphasized that training in drafting a Legal Opinion represents a valuable opportunity for students, particularly since similar training programs outside the university often require significant financial resources.

He also encouraged students not only to master general legal opinion writing but also to integrate Islamic legal perspectives and develop specialized competencies that can serve as professional preparation for their future careers.

Following the opening session, participants took a group photograph before proceeding to the main session, moderated by Ikfi Zamanul Fajri. The keynote speaker, M. Nuzul Wibawa, S.Ag., M.H., began his presentation by motivating participants to remain persistent in learning Legal Opinion drafting as an essential skill for legal practitioners.

During the session, the speaker explained that a Legal Opinion constitutes a non-binding legal opinion that must nevertheless be prepared professionally. He outlined several key characteristics, including being expert, contextual, concrete, beneficial, and legally grounded. He further explained that a Legal Opinion serves as a consideration for clients in making decisions and presented its systematic structure, ranging from the statement of facts and legal issues to the legal basis, analysis, and recommendations.

The discussion became increasingly dynamic during the question-and-answer session held before noon. Participants raised a number of critical questions, including the position of legal practitioners when conflicts arise between national and international law, as well as the qualification standards required for a Legal Opinion document to be professionally recognized. The speaker provided comprehensive explanations by relating the discussion to contemporary legal practice and developments.

The workshop then proceeded to a practical session, in which participants were given 45 minutes to independently draft a Legal Opinion based on a case study provided by the facilitator. Through this exercise, students were able not only to understand the theoretical aspects of legal opinion writing but also to directly apply legal analysis techniques and formulate concrete recommendations.

The activity concluded at 1:15 p.m. WIB with positive outcomes, including improved technical understanding among participants and the completion of simulated Legal Opinion drafts. Through this workshop, FSH UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta hopes to further equip students to face the challenges of the professional legal sector with strong analytical and practical competencies.
