FSH UIN Jakarta Students Broaden Islamic Law Perspectives through Student Mobility in Malaysia
FSH News, Kuala Lumpur – A total of 28 students from the Faculty of Sharia and Law (FSH), Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, participated in the International Student Mobility Program at the Academy of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya (APIUM), Malaysia, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The program, running until August 8, 2026, provided students with opportunities to expand their academic horizons and directly observe the practice of sharia judiciary in Malaysia.
This program was part of a series of academic exchanges between FSH UIN Jakarta and several institutions in Malaysia. In addition to Universiti Malaya (UM), students were scheduled to visit Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), the Department of Sharia Judiciary Malaysia (JKSM), and the Kuala Lumpur Mufti Department.
The delegation from FSH UIN Jakarta was led by Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Alumni, and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Kamarusdiana, M.H., accompanied by several lecturers. Participants came from various academic levels, including undergraduate (S1), master’s (S2), and doctoral (S3) programs.
Upon arrival at APIUM, the delegation was welcomed by Dr. Mohd Zaidi bin Daud, Head of the Department of Sharia and Law, along with faculty members and academic staff.
Carrying the theme “Cross-National Academic Synergy: Strengthening Research Capacity and Sharia Judicial Perspectives for Students,” the program was designed not only as an academic visit but also as a platform for exchanging ideas and experiences between Indonesian and Malaysian students and academics.
The theme aligned with the commitment of FSH UIN Jakarta and APIUM to strengthen cooperation in sharia and law, particularly through research capacity development, knowledge exchange, and enhancing students’ understanding of Islamic law at the international level.
During the academic sessions at Universiti Malaya, students engaged in discussions and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) on contemporary issues in Islamic law and comparative studies of sharia judicial systems in Indonesia and Malaysia. Guided by Dr. Mohd Zaidi bin Daud, the sessions allowed students to closely examine similarities and differences in legal systems and judicial practices between the two countries, while encouraging critical perspectives on evolving Islamic legal issues.
For FSH UIN Jakarta students, the experience provided an opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with academic dynamics and institutional practices abroad.
The International Student Mobility Program also served as a follow-up to the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between FSH UIN Jakarta and APIUM. This collaboration laid a strong foundation for both institutions to develop academic programs oriented toward the internationalization of education.
Beyond student exchanges, the partnership between FSH UIN Jakarta and Universiti Malaya aims to open broader avenues for cooperation in research and scholarly publications. Cross-national academic experiences are expected to encourage students and lecturers to build scholarly networks and produce studies relevant to the development of Islamic law at regional and global levels.
This student mobility initiative represents a strategic step by FSH UIN Jakarta in preparing graduates who not only possess expertise in sharia and law but also demonstrate adaptability, collaboration, and contributions within international academic environments.
Through strengthened networks with universities and legal institutions in Malaysia, FSH UIN Jakarta continues to foster an educational ecosystem that provides students with wider opportunities to learn, exchange ideas, and build academic experiences at the global level.
