HMPS HPI FSH UIN Jakarta Holds Legal Insight Visit 2026 at Komnas HAM, Strengthening Human Rights Awareness and Student Leadership
FSH News, Jakarta -
The Student Association of the Islamic Criminal Law Study Program (HMPS HPI), Faculty of Sharia and Law (FSH) at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta, period 2026–2027, organized the Legal Insight Visit 2026 under the theme “Organizational Management and Leadership” on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) in Jakarta.
The event was attended by 50 HMPS HPI board members, along with the Head and Secretary of the Islamic Criminal Law Study Program, as well as former HMPS HPI leaders. The Legal Insight Visit is one of the organizational development programs aimed at enhancing leadership capacity, strengthening student organizational governance, and broadening students’ understanding of human rights protection and enforcement.
The program was officially opened by Dr. Abdul Haris Semendawai, S.H., LL.M., Commissioner for Education and Outreach at Komnas HAM. In his remarks, he praised HMPS HPI’s initiative to use Komnas HAM as a learning space for students. He also reminded participants of the importance of upholding discipline, integrity, and compliance with academic and organizational regulations to maintain the reputation of the Islamic Criminal Law Study Program.
Dr. Semendawai further clarified the distinction between Komnas HAM and the Ministry of Human Rights. He emphasized that Komnas HAM is an independent state institution mandated to conduct research, outreach, monitoring, complaint handling, and mediation on human rights issues in Indonesia. Understanding these roles and authorities is crucial for students to gain a comprehensive perspective on the country’s human rights protection system.
The next session was delivered by Liza Yolanda, who introduced human rights as fundamental rights inherent to every individual from birth, regardless of ethnicity, religion, race, gender, or social background. She explained that respect for human rights forms the foundation of justice, equality, and human dignity in society, nationhood, and statehood.
Following this, Abiyunus presented on human rights from a legal perspective, explaining Komnas HAM’s mandate. He highlighted that human rights protection in Indonesia is constitutionally grounded in the 1945 Constitution and Law No. 39 of 1999 on Human Rights. The state is obliged to respect, protect, and fulfill citizens’ rights, while any alleged violations must be addressed through established legal mechanisms.
The event continued with an interactive discussion and Q&A session. Participants actively raised questions on contemporary human rights issues, complaint-handling mechanisms at Komnas HAM, and the role of students as agents of change in fostering a culture of human rights respect.
Through the Legal Insight Visit 2026, HMPS HPI board members not only gained knowledge about Komnas HAM’s institutional role but also learned about the importance of integrity in leadership, organizational management skills, and moral responsibility as law students in upholding justice and humanity.
The program concluded with a joint prayer, marking the end of the event. It is hoped that this direct learning experience at Komnas HAM will strengthen the academic and organizational capacity of HMPS HPI leaders for the 2026–2027 period, while fostering students’ commitment to advancing law enforcement and respect for human rights in Indonesia.a
